All Pro Dad – Mark Merrill

This one is a winner!  All Pro Dad focuses on having a game plan as a father in order to effectively impact and influence your children.  Using a sports driven format, this book provides many quotes and stories from influential business leaders and sports heroes that serve as great reminders and a source of encouragement.  I particularly liked the “huddle up” questions at the end of each chapter.  They are great conversation starters to use with children.

Annabelle Swift, Kindergartner – Amy Schwartz

Annabelle Swift, Kindergartener is a beginning of the school year classic, and we have been reading and re-reading it at our home the last couple of weeks!  Annabelle’s older sister Lucy attempts to prepare Annabelle for the first days of kindergarten, yet her advice proves less than helpful.  Ultimately, Annabelle’s own mathematical skills serve her well and allow her to shine.

Little House in the Big Woods – Laura Ingalls Wilder

I decided that it was time to start reading some of my favorite classics to our daughter this summer.  The Little House Series seemed like a good fit for her due to her love of the outdoors and since one of the main character is about her age.   I  couldn’t have imagined the instant love affair she would have with these books.  I have been using these for a special read aloud “Mommy reading time”, and she can’t seem to get enough of them.  The books provide a lot to talk about: the value of hard work, determination, kindness, respecting one’s elders, as well as working cooperatively as a family.  The Little House series is a winner!

Live to Give – Austin Gutwein

Using the Bible story of the loaves and the fishes as a framework, Austin shares how each and every one of us is special and has something to share that will ultimately have a positive impact.  This book was specifically written to encourage and empower teenagers, but I think the message is very well presented and would be an encouraging read for adults as well.    I particularly liked the questions at the end of each chapter.  They were a great starting point
for further reflection as well as discussion about the text.

Whose Legs are These? – Peg Hall

Whose Legs are These? is a colorful, engaging book that explores the legs of a wide array of animals.  It is written is an easy to understand manner for young children while still providing lots of interesting facts about the animals.  The supplementary materials at the back of the book including library and website references is a nice addition to the book.

What’s the Difference Between a Butterfly and a Moth? – Robin Koontz

We have a nature lover for a daughter so we are always looking for new books about plants and animals.  What’s the Difference Between a Butterfly and a Moth? is a terrific book with clear explanations that are appropriate for preschool aged children and lovely colorful illustrations.  It also includes a nifty section at the back of the book that includes fun facts, a glossary, as well as resources to learn more.
