Dear Grandchild, This is Me: A Gift of Stories, Wisdom, and Off-the-Record Tales

Dear Grandchild is a lovely keepsake journal.  It includes a wide range of questions that a grandparent can complete in order to share his/her experiences with a grandchild.  I particularly liked the “History and Me” section which allows one to share personal reflections related to a variety of historical events one personally experienced.  This journal is a lovely way to gather and keep family history details.

Blind Spots: What You Don’t See Can Hurt You – Tim Riddle and Fil Anderson

Blind Spots: What You Don’t See Can Hurt You is an interesting book.  Using a biblical perspective, it explores recognizing and addressing our blind spots.  Riddle and Anderson write with a conversational tone and use many personal examples which enhance the text.  Although this book is highly readable, the content cannot help but challenge the reader.

Way Back Wednesday – First Day of School

Today is our daughter’s first day of middle school, and the message of The Dot seemed the perfect way to start the year.  Looking forward to a great one!

The Dot is perhaps my favorite picture book of all time.  The Dot introduces us to Vashti a little girl who is not very eager about art class.  Her art teacher encourages her to “make her mark”.  With gentle guidance from her teacher, Vashti’s natural abilities as an artist as well as a teacher develop.  Ultimately, the simple text and accessible pictures pull the reader into Vashti’s story.  The profound impact of the words and actions of a teacher are highlighted and the power of enthusiasm and encouragement are reinforced.
