Blast from the Past ~ The Dot – Peter H. Reynolds

Couldn’t help but revisit my very favorite Peter H. Reynolds book this month…

The Dot is perhaps my favorite picture book of all time.  The Dot introduces us to Vashti a little girl who is not very eager about art class.  Her art teacher encourages her to “make her mark”.  With gentle guidance from her teacher, Vashti’s natural abilities as an artist as well as a teacher develop.  Ultimately, the simple text and accessible pictures pull the reader into Vashti’s story. The profound impact of the words and actions of a teacher are highlighted and the power of enthusiasm and encouragement are reinforced.

Little Happy Dreamer – Peter H. Reynolds

The power and the promise found in dreaming is celebrated in Little Happy Dreamer.  This book would be wonderful to share with little ones, but it could also be easily used as a read aloud with older students.  Beautiful illustrations and an encouraging message for all readers make this one a winner.

The Serpent Slayer and the Scroll of Riddles: The Kámbur Chronicles – Champ Thornton and Andrew Naselli

The Serpent Slayer is a delightful tale of time travel to biblical times.  Our protagonists, Emmet and Nomi, are observers of many of the most well know Bible stories from both the old and new testaments.  This is a unique book that would be great for late elementary school students.

While this complimentary book was provided for review by New Growth Press, no other compensation was given.  All remarks are my personal and honest opinions.

The Good Egg – Jory John

Although The Good Egg can be enjoyed by young learners as a fun picture book, it is a clever book with a deeper message that would be great to use with older learners.  Exhausted by trying to be good and influence the behavior of others, the protagonist (a good egg) learns life altering lessons in this engaging and funny tale that includes fantastic illustrations.

WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New – Marty Machowski

WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New explores the whispers of Jesus that are found within the Psalms.  Much like Machowski’s earlier work, The Ology, the primary audience for the book is children.  That being said, young and old alike can enjoy and learn from this beautifully illustrated collection.

I Wish You More is a delightful book filled with wishes for the future.  It is a great text to use at the end of the year with students, but it is also a great option that can be used at the beginning of the year as you discuss classroom expectations and goals for the school year and beyond with learners of varying ages.
