The Flowering Cross – Beth Ryan

Reading this book has become a special Easter tradition for our family.

The Flowering Cross was a very quick favorite for our daughter.  It is a touching Easter story which focuses on the transformational power of God’s love.

Katie is a six year old little girl who truly loves God.  She displays her unconditional love and kindness to her neighbor Jack who is known throughout the neighborhood for being “mean”.  Soon her kindness not only brings out kindness and gentleness in Jack but also a willingness to accept God’s love.

The illustrations in this book are amazing.  They bring the story to life with the use of vivid color and detail.  They truly enhance the story for the reader.

Bible verses as well as faith imprints which include discussion starters are found throughout the book and provide a terrific addition to the story.  Additionally, directions on how to create a flowering cross are also included at the end of the story.  This was particularly appreciated by this reader since our daughter has become keenly interested in the idea of our family making a flowering cross!

Darkest Night Brightest Day: A Family Devotional for the Easter Season – Marty Machowski

Darkest Night Brightest Day is a beautiful family devotional.  It is a perfect resource to use in preparation for Easter.  This book is cleverly designed to include the final days of the life of Jesus and his crucifixion with the book oriented one way, and then the reader flips the book over to read about resurrection.  This design reinforces the darkness that is transformed into ultimate hope.

Jesus Rose for Me – Jared Kennedy

Jesus Rose for Me is a terrific resource for sharing why we celebrate Easter with preschool and early elementary aged children.  Clear, easy to understand text is coupled with engaging illustrations.  The questions for further discussion found throughout the book are great for pause points to check for understanding and discussion.  This one is a winner!

The Easter Egg – Jan Brett

Hoppi the Bunny wants desperately to be selected to assist the official Easter Bunny, but when he looks at all of the eggs that are being decorated by his friends as a means of earning the opportunity, he questions his chances.  He finally decides he will simply make an egg that he is proud of and not worry so much about winning.  Hoppi’s efforts get interrupted when an egg falls out the robin’s nest.  Even though it is inconvenient, Hoppi does what he knows is right and helps the baby robin in the egg, and as a result, creates what becomes the most beautiful egg of all.
