Wayback Wednesday – Christmas Favorite

A Magical Christmas is a lovely story written in rhyme.  Little Mouse wants to know what exactly is the magic of Christmas.  In order to find the answer he goes and asks each member of his family, but each family member has a different answer.  Finally on Christmas Day Mommy Mouse shares with Little Mouse that all the answers were correct because…”The magic is love, Little Mouse.”

The illustrations in this book are particularly noteworthy.  They are simply beautiful.  Each page includes sections that are gently enhanced with glitter which truly bring the illustrations to life.

Wayback Wednesday – Christmas Favorite

God Gave Us Christmas begins with Little Cub asking his Mama about who “invented” Christmas.  The Little Cub wonders if it might be Santa.  Mama Bear explains that God invented Christmas and ultimately takes a journey with Little Cub in order to let him see that God is everywhere and how He gave us Christmas.

I really appreciate how this book directly addresses why we celebrate Christmas but also includes an explanation about Santa:

“Did God give us Santa?”

“Santa Claus reminds us about many good things like generosity and care.  But it is God and Jesus that we celebrate most come Christmas.”

God Gave Us Christmas is a sweet and wonderful Christmas book which includes beautiful illustrations.

Can I Tell You a Secret – Anna Kang

Can I Tell You a Secret is a precious book that features a little frog with a big secret – He is scared of the water and cannot swim!  This would be a problem for anyone to be sure, but it is a huge problem for a frog.  Ultimately, Monty the frog learns that conquering your fears is a lot easier when you have the help of a friend.
Can I Tell You a Secret is a darling book that would make a terrific read-aloud.

Favorite 1st Day of School Book!

This post is a flash from the past.  It was originally published in 2011.

The Kissing Hand is an old favorite to read at the start of the school year.  Little Chester Raccoon is hesitant to leave his mother’s side and go to school.  She assures him that he will love school once he is busy playing with new toys, new books, and new friends.  She also shares a special secret that has been in their family for years – the kissing hand.  The kissing hand allows a little love from home to be with Chester at all times and gives him the confidence he needs to tackle his first day of school.  Quite simply a heartwarming story that provides true comfort to little ones and perhaps a few Mommies and Daddies too!

I Need My Monster – Amanda Noll

I Need My Monster is a great new read-aloud.  This one turns fear of a monster being under one’s bed upside down.  Ethan actually finds having his very own monster under his bed reassuring.  When Gabe the Monster goes fishing for a week, poor Ethan has to suffer thru a variety of substitute monsters.  Sadly, none of them are quite right.  This one is a fun read!

Stuck – Oliver Jeffers

Oliver Jeffers is immensely talented; his illustrations can be found in many popular children’s books.  He is also an outstanding author.  Stuck is a terrific tale that chronicles what it takes to get a stuck kite out of a tree.  Young or old, you cannot help but smile and perhaps even giggle at the creativity that is used to release the kite.  This is a children’s book that would be perfect to use with older learners as a way of exploring cause and effect as well as problem solving.  This one is a new favorite!
