Finding Serendipity is a magical adventure that features Tuesday McGillycuddy and her faithful dog Baxter. Using her intellect, courage, and imagination, Tuesday is able to overcome a variety of challenges. This book is a lovely example of high quality story telling.
God Made All of Me is an outstanding book. Tackling the issue of how to protect your body is not an easy topic to put into a kid-friendly form, but this book has done it. Informative as well as a colorful and engaging, God Made All of Me reaffirmed previous discussions we have had with our daughter. I particularly liked the information regarding the difference between secrets and surprises as well as the discussion about each person being in charge of the their own body at all times.

When I was a sixth grade language arts teacher, How I Spent My Summer Vacation was one of my favorite books to use at the beginning of the school year with my students. This book does a terrific job of introducing young writers to the idea of employing imagination into their writing. Fun and enjoyable for young readers as well as big kids, How I Spent My Summer Vacation is a terrific resource for beginning of the school year fun.
In honor of our daughter’s first day of third grade….
First Day Jitters is a favorite from my days in the classroom. I love that the young lady who is suffering from first day jitters is a new teacher. This reality does not come to light until about half way thru the book, and it always took students by surprise when I read it the first week of school. This is a wonderful book to use in the classroom to help children realize that everyone feels a little nervous the first day of school…Even the teachers!
The premise of this book is that the main characters enter a world of real life fairy tales. It provides an exciting, fantasy adventure that had our daughter reading every spare minute she could find. She particularly liked the fact that the smart, savvy main character was a girl.
Fantasy books are a huge hit this summer at our house. The Cats of Tanglewood Forest features a little girl who goes on an amazing adventure through the forest and is able to meet and speak with many different animals. The illustrations found throughout this book truly enhance the text.
My daughter and I read this book last summer, and we are still talking about it.
The Hundred Dresses tells a thought provoking tale about peer pressure. Although written in the 1940’s it is sadly still highly relevant. Although a short book, there is great depth to this story, and I chose to partner read it with our daughter. It served as the catalyst for some excellent discussion about friends and friendship. Even as an adult I found the story compelling and haunting. It really sticks with you.
