Wind in the Willows is a HUGE favorite at our home! This classic tale is filled with adventure and animals that behave like human beings. Grahame’s descriptive detail helps the reader “see” Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad as well as appreciate their unique personalities and ultimately the friendship they share with one another.
As is often the case with classic tales, although enjoyed by children, this book is also loved by adults. It truly is a great story that is a delight to read.
I really love children’s books! Although our daughter is more interested in non-fiction animal books at the moment, I always make sure we take a look at the new picture books when we visit the library. When I pulled out Spoon I just knew it was going to be a winner, and from her quick request to read it again please directly after I finished it, I knew it was.
Great children’s books have a clear message that children as well as adults can understand and appreciate. Spoon has a big lesson to share. Spoon begins to question his life as a spoon imagining life would be so much better and ultimately more meaningful if he were a fork, a knife, or perhaps chopsticks. Little does he know the wistful ways in which the other utensils long to be more like him.
This one is not to be missed!
My First Hands-On Bible is an outstanding Bible for preschoolers. Our daughter was ready for something more than her Bible story book, but I just could find what I was looking for until I found this! The structure of this Bible allows parent and child to explore the Word of God through fun activities and discussion questions. Each Bible story is told using actual Bible text (New Living Translation). Within the text, there are colored handprints. These images signal a little activity that involves your child in the Bible passage through movement, searching for things in pictures, and role playing. At the end of each passage are follow up questions that help the child apply the text to his/her life as well as a prayer. There are also activities provided which allow extension of the story in your child’s normal routine. Finally each passage ends with a “Jesus Connection” which reinforces that Jesus is the center of all scripture and a real part of life.

The Beginning Reader’s Bible is a Bible story book. It contains thirteen stories from the Old Testament and thirteen stories from the New Testament. Each story is beautiful illustrated and is enhanced through special sections including: bible verse study, real world application ideas, and a prayer. Another great feature in this book are the various charts and lists that are included as reference material – Ten Commandments, listing of the 12 Apostles and the 12 Tribes of Israel, charts to note when stories were read and Bible verses were memorized, as well as a copy of the “Sinner’s Prayer”.
The Beginning Reader’s Bible is a lovely hardbound book which would make a wonderful gift for a little one.

I love Pete the Cat! This is another winner I found on the “new release shelf” at the library. Pete is enjoying his new white shoes. He is singing a song about them as he goes for a walk until he encounters some strawberries. Needless to say, the shoes are soon not white…
The delightful sing song rhyming found in the book allows it to be read as a story or more of a song and takes the reader on a wonderful journey with Pete and his shoes. The best part is the way in which Pete handles unexpected change. He teaches children and adults alike the power of resiliency and the importance of keeping things in perspective. A great book for a read aloud for little kids as well as big ones. It doesn’t get much better than Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes! A new favorite has been found…
The Kissing Hand is an old favorite to read at the start of the school year. Little Chester Raccoon is hesitant to leave his mother’s side and go to school. She assures him that he will love school once he is busy playing with new toys, new books, and new friends. She also shares a special secret that has been in their family for years – the kissing hand. The kissing hand allows a little love from home to be with Chester at all times and gives him the confidence he needs to tackle his first day of school. Quite simply a heartwarming story that provides true comfort to little ones and perhaps a few Mommies and Daddies too!
Library Mouse introduces the reader to an adorable little mouse named Sam who lives behind the children’s reference book section at the library. Sam loves his life living at the library and reads and reads and reads. After enjoying a wide variety of books, he decides to write a book himself. He shares his completed book with the library patrons by placing it on a book shelf at night. After a few of Sam’s masterpieces appear at the library, a request is made for Sam to appear at a “Meet the Author” event. Sam answers the request with some creative problem solving which ultimately allows everyone the opportunity to find their respective voice as a writer.
As a former English teacher, I absolutely love this book! It reinforces the power of reading in developing imaginative thought as well as clearly sharing that each and every one of us has a story to tell. It is a marvelous celebration of the power of reading and writing. The amazing illustrations and powerful message make it a perfect read aloud. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
A Christmas Prayer is a wonderful book that focuses on the true gifts of Christmas. It features a family preparing for the holidays and focuses on the actions of their daughter. As the story of Christmas is told the daughter recreates the nativity scene using her own toys. As she finds each figure for the nativity scene she thanks God for the role each played.
This book was a quick favorite for our daughter. The rhyming prayer is charming and makes the Christmas story accessible for young readers, and the illustrations are beautifully done and make the story come to life.

Someday is an extremely touching book. The reader is allowed to share the journey of “growing up” with mother and daughter. With each page you are introduced to another stage of the child’s life and the interaction of mother and child. One of my favorite parts of the book depicts the mother watching her sleeping daughter. The reader is reminded that when the daughter dreams, mom dreams too.
The illustrations truly make the words on the page come to life. They are almost magical in the way they are able to capture the love between mother and child. Peter H. Reynolds illustration work is truly delightful.

The Clever Stick is an enchanting tale. Who would ever imagine using a stick as the main character of a children’s picture book?! I found this one on the new picture book shelf at our local library and quickly realized I had found a winner. The expressive pictures couple perfectly with the smart text.
The stick is clever in countless ways from solving problems to enjoying poetry, but since he cannot speak his cleverness is not fully known. The stick’s journey of self-discovery takes the reader to unexpected places that ultimately delight.
This book is a perfect to share as a read aloud!
