Nerdy Birdy is back with a great new story. He has been introduced to social media and becomes a bit “over-connected”. He has to learn the hard way that real friends you can talk to and share adventures with are the most precious friends. This book has a very powerful message and could be used to start a conversation about responsible social media usage with young children as well as adults.
Nerdy Birdy is a delightful book about appreciating and accepting who you are coupled with a lesson about the power of friendship. Although a great children’s book for a read-aloud, this book would also be a tremendous resource at the secondary level. We love Nerdy Birdy at our house and are looking forward to reading the second Nerdy Birdy book – Nerdy Birdy Tweets.
The Beacon Street Girls Series is a lovely collection. Although our daughter is not traditionally a fan of realistic fiction, this series kept her interest. These well-written books are geared for girls between the ages of nine and thirteen. Each story is told through alternating narration by four friends. As the series progresses, the character development continues to grow and the stories are reflective of real life events experienced by tween girls.

Our daughter is always eager to read Katherine Applegate’s newest book. Wishtree did not disappoint. This story is told from the point of view of Red, who is an enormous Red Oak Tree. The tree serves as the “wishtree” for the entire neighborhood. This is a beautifully written book about friendship and community that sticks with you and makes you think.
If you are looking for a Christmas gift for a sports-loving tween/teen girl, this book would be a great pick! Using the same format as Ignotofsky’s previous best-seller Women in Science, this volume recognizes the athletic achievements of women in sports. Enjoyable and educational…This one is a winner!

Adored is a lovely devotional. Each daily passage begins with scripture and then includes a few paragraphs which cover applying that verse within your life. There are also a few lines provided for notes at the end of each section. If you have a tween or teen girl on your Christmas list, this devotional would make a perfect gift.

A Forest, a Flood, and an Unlikely Star is the third book in the Rwendigo Series. This African adventure story which features a boy, his sister, and an orphaned gorilla is filled with action. It also includes many current concerns that face Africa including AIDS, malnutrition, and environmental concerns. This series is written for upper elementary and middle school aged children, but is worthy of being partner read with a parent in order to discuss all the material presented in the text.

Brave Beauty is a terrific devotional for tween girls that focuses on becoming a courageous and confident girl. Each devotional entry provides scripture and a story that a young girl can easily relate to plus a short activity. The final portion of each devotional includes a prayer. This devotional would make a lovely gift for a special young lady.

Our daughter found the display for the 2017-2018 Bluebonnet Award nominees at the library and has been faithfully reading through them. Some Kind of Courage has been one of her favorites. It is a historical fiction book that will literally have you at the edge of your seat as you read it. Some Kind of Courage is beautifully written and highlights the importance of strength, determination, and character.
