Nurk is a wonderful adventure story that features a shrew named Nurk who is an unlikely hero. Courage, friendship, kindness and hope are explored in this thought-provoking tale that will delight intermediate elementary readers as well as their parents.

Echo was another favorite for our daughter as she read the nominated books for the Texas Bluebonnet Award. The book is a bit larger than most nominated works (592 pages), but the length did not dissuade her as a reader. She truly could not put this one down. I found her reading it every time she had a chance as well as a number of times she really needed to be doing other things. Echo is beautifully written and provides a considerable degree of depth and complexity for the reader. Using three stand alone historical fiction stories that focus on the need to be brave, the author expertly interweaves them together using the musical ability of the children and a harmonica as a special link. This book lends itself for discussion and would make a great text for a mother/daughter book club.
Our daughter always enjoys the Faithgirlz books! They are a quick, easy, fun read. As a parent I love that these books do not include any content of concern, and they encourage behavior that displays kindness to others.

Once our daughter started reading this book, she couldn’t put it down. The Inquisitor’s Tale is a fantasy story set in France during the Middle Ages. Each chapter is a different tale told by a different story teller at an inn. Ultimately their stories weave together to share the experiences of the three magical children and their holy dog. There is a lot of depth and complexity to this book. It could be enjoyed by tween and teen readers as well as their parents.
I had seen this book on a number of “best books of the year” lists and decided to pick it up at the library for our daughter. I am so glad I did! Pax is a wilderness adventure story and so much more. Told from alternating points of view, seven year old Peter and Pax the Fox share their friendship and their quest to find each other again after a heartbreaking separation. This is a gripping book that will make you cry as well as think whether you are the target audience (8-12 years old) or an adult. If you are looking for a book to read and discuss with your upper elementary/middle school age child, this is a great pick!
Light Up New York is the fourth and final book in Faithgirlz’ Glimmer Girl Series. Our daughter has enjoyed all of them! They are a quick, easy, fun read. As a parent I love that these books do not include any content of concern, and they encourage behavior that displays kindness to others.

Cornelia’s life changing friendship with her elderly neighbor Virginia Somerset makes for a terrific tale that features rich vocabulary and wonderful adventures that span the globe. The story within a story format and great descriptive details makes this book a most enjoyable read. This one is a winner!
This post was originally published on July 16, 2016. Our daughter received the boxed set of this edition of The Chronicles of Narnia for Christmas, and she has been delighting in re-reading the series on her own.
The Chronicles of Narnia is an amazing fantasy series with strong Biblical themes. It can be enjoyed by children as well as adults. Our daughter has been reading thru the series with Dad at bedtime and loves it. I highly recommend partner reading these book aloud with your child and discussing them. There is a lot to take in for the reader on every page. This particular edition of the series includes beautiful illustrations and would make a terrific gift.
Faithgirlz materials are very popular with our daughter. This devotional is no exception. It is written for tween girls and uses Philippians 4:8 as a foundation for discussion of a wide range of topics important to tween young ladies. Each devotional begins with a scripture passage and a brief reading that relates to the scripture and then includes a “food for thought” tidbit as well as “second thoughts” suggestions for applying the ideas covered in the passage. Also included is a “divine thoughts” section which provides a prayer and finally, a “your thoughts” section where one can share her own insights. This one is a winner!

Prayers and Answered Prayers is really two small journal books in one. One of the books features prompts for the reader to use for prayers while the other focuses on answered prayers. Each page is produced with an eye catching fun format and there are lots of spaces provided to color, add your own thoughts and ideas as well as draw. Both volumes are housed in a super sparkly floral cover that would certainly appeal to tween and teen girls. This would make a terrific Christmas gift!
