Real Women Leading with Proverbs 31 Values – Lisa Troyer and Dawn Yoder

Real Women Leading with Proverbs 31 Values shares ten different values from Proverbs 31 and then discusses them in action using a variety of different women from the Bible.  The authors do a great job of making the material highly applicable to everyday experiences.  This book is well worth reading and provides much to think about for the reader.

Weelicious Lunches: Think Outside the Lunchbox with More than 160 Happier Meals – Catherine McCord

Well, I really liked the first Weelicious cookbook so I had to check out the second one, and I think I may even like it better than the first!  It is easy to get in a lunch making rut when it comes to packing lunches for little ones.  This cookbook provides a ton of fun, healthy, innovative ideas.  The chocolate chip granola bars are a new pantry staple for us.  They are delicious. easy and nut-free.

The Secrets of Happy Families – Bruce Feiler

The Secrets of a Happy Family was a disappointment.  Much of the material was recycled from other parenting books (i.e. – importance of family dinners).  That which was not recycled came from an “expert” panel that the author assembled of creative solution seekers that included problem solvers from Silicon Valley as well as military elites (Green Berets).  Although some of the team building exercises and problem solving strategies can easily transfer over to a family organization, others do not.  Mr. Feiler’s attempt at sharing the smartest solutions for families did not include any awareness or application of child development.  As a result, I found this book lacking.

Weelicious: 140 Fast, Fresh, and Easy Recipes – Catherine McCord

Although I enjoy cooking, I don’t traditionally review recipe books, but I am making an exception for Weelicious: 140 Fast, Fresh, and Easy Recipes.  I love this cookbook!  The recipes are easy and the results have been yummy for our entire family.  Turkey Pesto Meatballs were a big hit as were the Peanut Butter and Jelly Breakfast Cupcakes.  Highly accessible recipes that deliver delicious healthy food options make this recipe book a winner!

The Painted Table – Suzanne Field

The Painted Table would make a great selection for a book club pick.  It is a rich novel which explores mental illness and provides the reader with a great deal to process.  A strongly emotional tale, this book is well written and highly engaging.  I found I kept coming back to the book whenever I could in order to find out what happened next in the lives of these characters; I genuinely cared about them.

Peace on Earth: A Christmas Collection – Mary Engelbreit

Peace on Earth: A Christmas Collection is a wonderful Christmas book filled with illustrated versions of well known carols, stories, and poems.  As a fan of Mary Engelbreit’s artwork for many years, I was excited to receive this review copy in the mail, and it not only met but exceeded my expectations.  Peace of Earth: A Christmas Collection would make a terrific holiday gift.  It truly captures the magic of the season!

Encouragement for Today: Devotions for Everyday Living – Renee Swope, Lysa TerKerust, and Samantha Evilsizer

If you are a fan of the e-mail devotions produced by Proverbs 31 Ministries, this little devotional book is for you.  Each devotional includes a Bible verse and then a personal story that includes that verse in action.  Following the readings are prompts related to remembering, reflecting, and responding to the lesson.  Although each devotion is brief, each one gives the reader a great deal to reflect upon throughout the day.

The Matchbox Diary – Paul Fleischman

A little girl spends the afternoon getting to know her great-grandfather better by exploring a cigar box filled with matchboxes.  Lovingly, the great-grandfather lets the little girl select different matchboxes, and he proceeds to share the significance of each item they find within them.  The stories shared take us from the journey he took from Italy to America and his first years here.  This one is a gem!

I’ve Got Your Back: Biblical Principles for Leading and Following Well – James C. Galvin

I’ve Got Your Back: Biblical Principles for Leading and Following Well is a great little book.  It is divided into two parts.  The first section is a leadership parable that follows a group of people who are trying to discover what it means to be a good leader.  The second portion of the book explores the theology behind that story.  Galvin does a great job explaining Biblical leadership and exploring it in action.  This book is a quick read, and whether you are more of a leader or more of a follower,  the content can be easily applied to everyday life.

The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today’s World – Susan Merrill

I enjoy Susan Merrill’s writing from iMom so I was looking forward to reading The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today’s World.  This book was even better than I had hoped.  Susan has used the book of Nehemiah as a guide to parenting and provides parallels throughout her text.  The focus of this book is to provide encouragement to mothers as well as to provide a practical, biblically based plan to further development and growth.  This one is a winner!
