I Have Seen God – Klaus-Dieter John

I Have Seen God shares the inspirational story of medical missionaries Klaus-Dieter and Martina John.  Their account of building a state of the art health care facility in the Peruvian Andes, in order to care for the poverty stricken families that live in this area, is an amazing display of the miracles that God continues to perform today.  This is truly an inspiring book.

Best Books of the Summer

Next week I am taking a blogging vacation in order to enjoy the last week of summer vacation with our little lady.  It has been a terrific summer filled with lots and lots of great books.  As a recap, here are our top five summer favorites:

The Loving Kitchen – LeAnn Rice

LeAnn Rice writes a food blog that is filled with yummy creations.  The Loving Kitchen features many of Rice’s favorite dishes which are southern comfort food classics.  These recipes are delicious, but many of them are very hearty and liberally use ingredients like heavy cream.  Traditionally, photographs in a cookbook are an added bonus.  Unfortunately in this cookbook, many of the photographs seem to have been taken a bit too close to the food, and ultimately make the food look a bit less appetizing.

Moms’ Night Out and Other Things I Miss…Devotions to Help You Survive! – Kerri Pomarolli

I am very blessed to work with a variety of publishers and literary publicity groups that allow me to review books for them.  Yesterday, I reviewed Moms’ Night Out.  When I received that book in the mail for review,  I also received a “bonus item” – a companion book.  Moms’ Night Out and Other Things I Miss…Devotions to Help You Survive.  This was a nice surprise.

Moms’ Night Out and Other Things I Miss…Devotions to Help You Survive! is a great book of devotions for Moms.  Each entry is fairly brief and captures the humor to be found in the day to day challenges of motherhood.  At the end each entry is a “Take a Moment to Think About…” section which is well done.  Although highly enjoyable and relevant to a mother of a seven year old, I think this devotional would be particularly appreciated by mothers of babies and toddlers.

Moms’ Night Out – Tricia Goyer

Moms’ Night Out provides the reader with a funny story as well as a worthwhile message.  Although more than a bit far-fetched, this book was completely enjoyable.  This is a quick, easy read that will have you laughing out-loud.  Ultimately, it provides a wonderful message regarding the blessings of motherhood and the power of self-acceptance.

Bedtime Math – Laura Overdeck

Bedtime Math has become a favorite part of our daughter’s bedtime routine.  This book is filled with word problems that are presented in short story, riddle-like format coupled with math questions that span three different levels (wee ones, little kids, and big kids).  Our seven year old delights in trying to answer the questions in all three levels each evening.

The bright engaging pictures and the fun topics make math problems at bedtime a delight.  This one is a winner!

Mom Seeks God: Practicing Grace in the Chaos – Julia Roller

As a new mother it is hard not to feel overwhelmed at times.  Mom Seeks God presents advice regarding how to grow spiritually during the early years of motherhood.  The text would be terrific for a new mother’s Bible study.  It takes the reader through ten spiritual disciplines with humor and practical ideas to aid growth in your faith.

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis – Colin Duriez

This book was so much more than I was expecting.  It is truly an encyclopedia of the life and work of C.S. Lewis.  Enthusiastic fans as well as true scholars, will be able to appreciate this text.  It is truly exhaustive and helps a reader gain greater understanding of Lewis and his work.
