Way Back Wednesday ~ Wind in the Willows – Kenneth Grahame

This review was originally posted August 31, 2011.

Wind in the Willows is a HUGE favorite at our home!  This classic tale is filled with adventure and animals that behave like human beings. Grahame’s descriptive detail helps the reader “see” Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad as well as appreciate their unique personalities and ultimately the friendship they share with one another.

As is often the case with classic tales, although enjoyed by children, this book is also loved by adults.  It truly is a great story that is a delight to read.

Gus Loses His Grip – David Powilson

Gus Loses His Grip is another great book from the Good News for Little Hearts Series.  In this book, Gus struggles with his sweet tooth and his desire for more and more treats which ultimately leads to not only sneaking treats into his room but stealing from a local store.  Written from a Christian perspective, this book is an outstanding resource in helping children recognize how to handle situations when one wants something too much.  As is the case for all books in this series, a section that includes additional support for parents to have further discussion with their children as well as a listing of relevant Bible verses is included.

Henry Says Good-Bye – Edward T. Welch

Henry Says Good-Bye is another book in the Good News for Little Hearts series.  This tale focuses on dealing with grief and loss from a Christian perspective.  It is an excellent resource to open up discussion with a child who has experienced a recent loss.  Of particular note is the Helping Your Child Understand Sadness section at the back of the book which provides additional ideas for parents in order to effectively provide support for little ones.  Bible verses that reinforce the lessons in the book are also a terrific addition.

Why Do We Say Good Night? is a terrific bedtime story that takes the worry out of the darkness of the night for young children.  This reassuring tale provides clear biblically best reasons why little ones have nothing to fear when they go to bed at night.  The immersive illustrations bring the text alive.  There are lots of interesting details to discover in every two page spread.  This one is a winner!

This post was originally published on October 31, 2012.

Lauren Thompson is a great author.  Her Mouse series highlights the many firsts encountered by a little mouse.  Mouse’s First Halloween follows inquisitive little mouse through all sorts of Halloween experiences which in the end all prove not to be so scary after all.  This is a gentle Halloween tale that would make a great read aloud.
