Brave Girls: Faithful Friends ~ A 90-Day Devotional for Brave Girls Like You! is an terrific devotional book for girls 7-10.  I had reviewed another devotional in the Brave Girls Series, and I was excited to have the opportunity to review another.  The one page devotions are filled with great insights about being a good friend and developing strong friendships.  The questions and activities coupled with each reading reinforce the important lessons presented and are well done.  This is another winner!

10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know – Kari Kampakis

This book started as a blog post and received such a positive response that it has been expanded into book form.  It should be a must read for all tween/teen girls.  Kampakis provides so much good information.  The discussion questions at the end of each chapter are outstanding.  This text would be terrific for a mother/daughter book study.

Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures – Kate DiCamillo

Kate DiCamillo is a beloved author in our home so I was excited to share this book with our daughter.  I thought we might read it together.  She had other ideas.  She truly could not put this book down and read and read with joy and audible giggles.

Flora and Ulysses is a zany tale that features a squirrel who can fly and types poetry.  These skills appear after he is rescued from a near death experience with a vacuum cleaner by ten year old Flora.  The duo shares a special bond and a number of exciting adventures.  DiCamillo books always provide terrific character development.  This book also features outstanding vocabulary use and interesting sentence structure.  It is definitely a new favorite!

 

Young Women of Faith Bible

The Young Women of Faith Bible is designed specifically for tween and teen girls.  It features weekly Bible studies that apply Bible truths to daily life.  There are side notes throughout the text which provide additional explanation for the reader and a memory challenge section which highlights meaningful verses.  The way this Bible is formatted encourages one to want to read and study the word of God.  This Bible is an excellent option for girls nine and older.

Live to Give – Austin Gutwein

Using the Bible story of the loaves and the fishes as a framework, Austin shares how each and every one of us is special and has something to share that will ultimately have a positive impact.  This book was specifically written to encourage and empower teenagers, but I think the message is very well presented and would be an encouraging read for adults as well.    I particularly liked the questions at the end of each chapter.  They were a great starting point
for further reflection as well as discussion about the text.

Crazy Dangerous – Andrew Klavan

Crazy Dangerous is very different than the books that I usually read.  It is a young adult novel that is in the “thriller” genre.  Although a bit slow to start, the book is a quick read that is hard to put down once you are past the first few chapters.  The story is told by a sixteen year old boy and captures his sense of humor.  Additionally, the plot is well developed and effectively explores good and evil.

M.O.M. (Mom Operating Manual) – Doreen Cronin

As Mother’s Day approaches, M.O.M. (Mom Operating Manual) seemed like a logical choice to feature.  This books highlights care instructions for Moms in order to attain peak performance.  The idea is cute, and the illustrations are darling.  Although this book could be enjoyed to a degree by young children, it was written more for grown ups.  Many of the situations described are laugh out loud funny for Moms but just don’t deliver for a young reader.

The Beauty Book~The Lily Series – Nancy Rue

The Lily Series is a group of Christian books that include fiction as well as non-fiction titles and devotionals.  The Beauty Book explores beauty on the inside as well as the outside and is targeted to a “tween” audience.  It does an excellent job revealing what true beauty really is as well as tackling common questions and concerns of young girls in a God-centered manner.
