Lilly’s Chocolate Heart – Kevin Henkes
Lily’s Chocolate Heart is a favorite at our home, and our daughter is always excited when I pull out our Valentine’s Day books and this gem appears. Lilly has one more chocolate heart left at bedtime on Valentine’s Day. She searches and searches for just the right place for her last chocolate heart but finds that none of them are quiet right until she decides to place it safely in her tummy.
Who Are You , Baby Kangaroo? – Stella Blackstone and Clare Beaton
Who Are You, Baby Kangaroo? was rediscovered by our four year old this weekend. As she was trying to figure out what book she wanted me to read to her, she came across this favorite from her toddler days. She was delighted to realize that this book was now within her grasp as an independent reading book.
Learning about animals is one of our preschoolers favorite pastimes. In this book, a little puppy wants to know what a baby kangaroo is called, but the kangaroo will not share the answer. Ultimately, the puppy goes on a journey to discover the name of baby kangaroo (a joey) and meets a multitude of animal friends and their babies along the way.
This book is filled with repetition and rhyme and almost has a musical quality when read aloud. The pictures are bright, colorful, and unique and really make the text come to life.
Two Little Chicks – Valeri Gorbachev
This is such a sweet little book! Two Little Chicks tells the tale of two little chicks who go to the playground and quickly become overwhelmed by all the activity. As they approach each piece of equipment another animal asks if they want to play to which they reply that they can’t. Finally, they take a chance sliding down the slide by riding on beaver’s tail and they discover they can do it, and it is fun.
This is a great story of encouragement for little ones who may be a bit more cautious which is beautifully illustrated.
The Elf on the Shelf – Carol V. Aebersold and Chanda A. Bell
The Elf on the Shelf shares a family tradition that was created to answer the question of how Santa knew if the children of the home belonged on the “nice list” or the “naughty list”. The answer is that a little scout elf comes to your home to watch and listen and then report to Santa each night. When the elf returns he finds a new spot to observe and ultimately leaves with Santa on Christmas Eve to return again the following year during the holiday season. Finding our elf (Edward) is the number one priority each morning for our daughter. It is a delight to watch her excitement.
If you have little ones in your home this is a must have!
A Magical Day with Matisse – Julie Merberg and Suzanne Bober
The Mini Masters Series has been a favorite in our home since our daughter was very, very little. These board books feature the works of world-renowned artists coupled with lyrical text. A Magical Day with Matisse starts with an invitation to come out and play and then takes the reader through a day of fun while featuring Matisse’s masterpieces. Our daughter still loves to look at these books, and they often are selected to be brought in the car to be read and enjoyed when we go on errands. The Mini Masters Series is an all around winner which our whole family has enjoyed.
Starry Safari – Linda Ashman
Starry Safari is a darling book the features a spunky little girl on a jungle adventure. Written in rhyme the book features delightful pictures which are colorful and engaging. The best part is the surprise ending. This one is definitely a winner!
Corduroy’s Thanksgiving – Lisa McCue
Corduroy helps introduce the reader to Thanksgiving traditions as he celebrates with his friends. This board book includes darling pictures and does an excellent job highlighting Thanksgiving activities from preparing pies, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, enjoying football, sharing what you are thankful for, and simply enjoying each other. A great first explanation of Thanksgiving which is totally accessible to young children.
Pete the Cat~Rocking in My School Shoes – Eric Litwin
Last year I had the pleasure of discovering Pete the Cat which I have previously reviewed. This year he is back and headed to school. Pete takes readers on a school tour all the while “rocking in his school shoes”. As he visits the library, the lunchroom, and the playground he always has a positive attitude and he dances and sings his way through the day. The song Pete sings on his school tour is included via a CD at the back of the book. This book and song combo would make for a perfect first week of school activity for school age children. What a treat!
Little by Little – Amber Stewart
Little by Little is one of the best books I have found about learning to swim. Otto the Otter is able to do many things well including being kind to frogs. There seems to be only one thing he is not able to do – swim. The story follows his attempts to learn to swim which are not going very well until his sister tells him that “…he needs to start small to finish big”. From that point forward, Otto proceeds in taking little steps every day and before long he is swimming. The pride Otto the Otter feels in his accomplishment is captured beautifully in the delightful illustrations.
